What is the Best Car Insurance Comparison Site?

According to customer ratings from independent review sites Trustpilot and Reviews.co.uk, QuoteZone is the best car insurance comparison site. QuoteZone has been rated by customers with 4.8 out of 5 stars at Reviews.co.uk and 4.6 out of 5 stars at Trustpilot. These scores are higher than those of GoCompare, MoneySupermarket, Confused and Compare the Market (source: https://www.nimblefins.co.uk/cheap-car-insurance).

While customer ratings may not be the only metric to consider when determining the ‘best car insurance comparison site’, they are certainly extremely important. Customer ratings reflect the customer experience, from the prices and features of the policies on offer to the ease of getting quotes and the entire buying experience.

Comparison site customer ratings won’t, however, reflect the claims experience. This would be reflected in each individual insurance provider’s own customer ratings.

Which is the best website to compare car insurance?

While QuoteZone might have the best customer ratings, there is really no one best-for-everyone website to compare car insurance. There are many car insurance comparison options in the UK, including MoneySupermarket, GoCompare, Confused.com, Compare the Market, Money, QuoteZone, NimbleFins and more. They all provide access to dozens of car insurance providers.

But some have access to providers or deals that other comparison sites don’t have in their panels. So the ‘best’ for one person may not be the ‘best’ for another. That’s why it’s so important to compare prices with multiple sites before making a purchase.

How to get the best car insurance quote

To get the best car insurance quote, the first step is to compare prices with multiple providers. Car insurance rates can be 5X more with one provider than the next, so if you only check one source and make a purchase, you could massively overpay.

From there, have a think about which features you really need. For instance, if you have a new car and you never drive far from home, do you really need the extra breakdown cover? Or if so, do you need the premium breakdown cover, or would a basic level suffice for you? If you have access to another vehicle or do not rely on your vehicle (e.g., you can use public transport to get to work or the shops), do you need to pay extra to get a courtesy car?

Think about where you keep your car at night. If you keep it on the street but could keep it on your drive, you might consider doing so. Cars kept on a private drive might be cheaper to insure than cars parked on the road at night due to a lower chance of theft.

Also, consider the excess. The excess is the amount you pay towards a claim. You may be able to lower your premium by choosing a plan with a lower excess. But keep in mind that a higher excess might not suit you. You’d have to come up with the excess and cover this amount if you claim. While a higher excess can reduce your car insurance rate, it should be an amount that you can easily cover.

Also, see if adding an older, responsible driver with a good record to your policy would help lower the premium.

And surprisingly, opting for comprehensive cover (instead of third party only or third party, fire and theft) can be cheaper. It offers the best cover, so you’d think it would cost more, but interestingly it often doesn’t.

Which car insurance companies are not on comparison sites?

While most UK car insurance providers are on comparison sites, some are not, including Direct Line, Adrian Flux and Aviva. While Admiral is on some comparison sites, their multicar products are not. So if you have more than one vehicle to insure and want to see an offer from Admiral, you’d need to go direct.

The companies choosing not to be on comparison site have their reasons. One would be that they can offer cheaper rates to customers who come direct, as they don’t have to pay a commission to the comparison site. Or instead of cheaper rates, you might find more optional features included as standard.

While Direct Line is not on comparison sites, another of their brands is – Churchill. Churchill is part of the Direct Line Group.
