US Journalist Jailed for 11 Years in Myanmar for Inciting Dissidence and Violating Migration Law

American journalist Danny Fenster has been sentenced to 11 years in prison in Myanmar. His employer Frontier Myanmar announced this on Friday.

Frontier Myanmar editor-in-chief Fenster was detained by the military junta at Rangoon International Airport in May as he tried to leave the country. He was on trial for incitement to dissent, unlawful association and violation of the migration law.

Fenster is also suspected of terrorism and incitement in a separate procedure and faces a life sentence.

His trial is taking place behind closed doors. The United States has been trying to get Fenster released for some time. “His detention is unacceptable. Journalism is not a crime,” a US diplomacy spokesperson said recently.

Myanmar has been plunged into chaos since the February 1 military putsch. The regime is using bloody repression against opponents, and the press is being muzzled by the junta, restricting internet access and cancelling media licenses.
