Unknown Virus in China Causes Lung Disease: What is Going On?

A new virus, hitherto unknown to science, leads to many cases of severe pneumonia in eastern China. Forty-one people are infected, two patients have died.

The exact cause of the infection is still unclear. An unknown virus that causes lung problems is always a source of concern and health experts are therefore extra alert.

Since the end of last year, there have been many reports of mysterious lung disease in and around Wuhan, the capital of the eastern Chinese province of Hubei. Patients suffer from a high fever and have difficulty breathing. Chest scans show advanced inflammation in both lungs.

The condition appears to have been caused by a virus that was previously unknown to scientists.

It reminded the Chinese government and health experts of SARS (Severe acute respiratory syndrome), a lung disease that broke out in China at the end of 2002, affected more than 8,000 people and claimed more than 700 lives. The virus that caused SARS was also unknown until then.

It seems that this time is not going well. There are officially 41 cases of lung disease confirmed. Two people died; one of them was a patient who already had severe health problems.

In any case, the Chinese government is alert and cooperates with the World Health Organization (WHO) to bring more light into the darkness.
