Twitter has blocked almost 6,000 accounts because they were used to spread propaganda about Saudi Arabia, with support from the authorities in that country.
The accounts were mainly used to spread messages that were beneficial to the Saudi authorities. Twitter says that they automatically tweet, retweet and reply to tweets automatically and sent.
This mainly happened in Arabic. They also tried to influence twitterers in the West, for example about sanctions against Iran, an arch-enemy of Saudi Arabia.
According to Twitter, the influence was driven by a PR agency in Saudi Arabia, called Smaat. That company would have created, purchased or managed the accounts.
Smaat is no longer welcome on Twitter. The company arranged the Twitter accounts for Saudi government services.
