The United States is increasing pressure on the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
The US authorities have imposed sanctions on dozens of companies and individuals, including the Syrian leader and his wife, Asma.
It would be the most severe punitive measures to date.
Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo said in a statement that more sanctions would be imposed soon.
“We will not stop until Assad, and his regime ends the senseless, brutal war against the Syrian people.”
US penalties are another blow to Assad, who seems to be winning the military after years of civil war. However, his country is also in financial distress.
