The Hong Kong government is likely to announce that the parliamentary elections will be postponed on Friday afternoon.
The South China Morning Post newspaper reports this based on anonymous sources.
The election is now scheduled for September 6. The authorities are expected to cite the deteriorating situation surrounding the coronavirus as the main reason for the postponement.
The postponement would be another blow to the pro-democracy opposition, which hopes to achieve a significant victory in September.
Twelve opposition members have been told they are not allowed to participate in the elections.
It is still unclear how long the elections will be postponed. According to some insiders, this may be a one-year extension.
