Taliban Search for IS Infiltrators in Afghan Army

The Taliban are conducting background checks on military personnel to track down Islamic State infiltrators.

“Anyone who is seen as harmful to the government or the people of Afghanistan and who abuses the authority of the government will be removed from our ranks and eliminated,” said spokesman Ahmadullah Wasiq. According to the spokesman, some unknown gunmen are raiding houses or punishing people in the name of the Taliban.

Since the evacuation of US troops last summer, IS has carried out five major attacks in Afghanistan. The latest was on November 2, when gunmen attacked a military hospital in Kabul, killing 20 people. A high-ranking commander was also killed. No one claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Taliban blamed ISIS.

There were also some targeted murders of former government officials, including police officers. For example, four activists and four members of the former police were recently found dead in the city of Mazar-e-Sharif. Locals blamed the Taliban for their deaths, but the Taliban pointed the finger at IS.

Shortly after the Taliban came to power, there were reports of armed group members going door to door to find and kill opponents or people collaborating with the previous government or the Americans. The Taliban spokesman declined to comment on those allegations but said the group would investigate them.
