Russian President Putin Opens Train Connection between Russia and Crimea

Russian President Putin has officially opened the train connection between Crimea and southern Russia.

The president was on board the first official train that ran over the eighteen-kilometre bridge. A parallel bridge for cars had already been opened last year. The Crimea is in the Black Sea.

The peninsula was Ukrainian territory until 2014, but it was annexed by Russia after a controversial referendum.

The new railway bridge is intended to strengthen the bond between Crimea and southern Russia further.
