Russia no longer participates in the Council of Europe. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow, the countries of the European Union and NATO are undermining the functioning of the council.
The council was established in 1949 to promote peace, the rule of law, democracy and human rights in all countries of Europe.
The council is completely separate from the EU and has almost fifty members, including countries in the Caucasus.
Russia was suspended from the council shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
