Russia Conquers Ukrainian Island in Black Sea

Russia has conquered an island in the Black Sea from Ukraine. An unknown number of Ukrainian soldiers were holed up there.

According to Kyiv, 13 people were involved. They would have fought until they were killed by shelling a Russian naval vessel. Russia says that 82 Ukrainian soldiers on the island have surrendered. Messages from the front can hardly be checked.

President Volodimir Zelensky says the killed soldiers will be honoured posthumously as the Hero of Ukraine, the country’s highest award. Ukraine released a recording of Russians calling on the Ukrainians to surrender. The Ukrainians reply with swear words. The authenticity of the recording has not been confirmed.

The island is called Zmiinji, or Snake Island. It is near the shipping routes to Odesa, Ukraine’s third-largest city.
