One of the Last Known Opposition Figures Arrested in Moscow

Renowned Kremlin critic, Ilya Yashin, has been arrested in Moscow. According to his lawyer, Yashin is accused of disobeying police orders. The politician can be jailed for 15 days for that.

He is one of the last opposition figures to freely criticize Putin.

Yashin has been elected to the Moscow City Council and has recently been critical of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. His lawyer says he is not allowed to see Jasjin in the police station where he is now. A court will decide on Tuesday whether he will remain in detention, under provisional house arrest or a subpoena.

The opposition member was best known for the major protests against President Putin in 2011 and 2012. He then organized large gatherings of Kremlin critics and was arrested several times. In the years that followed, Jasjin also organized demonstrations and was imprisoned several times.

In recent years, more and more opposition members have been arrested. The most famous critic Alexei Navalny is currently serving a sentence of 11.5 years. New laws also allow people who criticize the war in Ukraine to be imprisoned for up to 15 years.
