The number of new corona infections in Germany diagnosed in the last 24 hours has increased again after falling numerous days in a row.
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the German equivalent of the RIVM, reports 11,369 new infections on Tuesday morning.
On Saturday, Sunday and Monday, there were still around 18,500, 14,000 and 7,000 infections, respectively. That failure has come to an end with the new figures from Tuesday. Germany passed the mark of 2 million infection cases on Friday. The coronavirus has been diagnosed in a total of 2,052,028 people in Germany.
In the past 24 hours, at least 989 people died in Germany from the effects of Covid-19. The total death toll is now at least 47,622 people.
Chancellor Angela Merkel has an early meeting with the sixteen state prime ministers on Tuesday about even stricter corona measures. The talks were supposed to be next week, but Berlin is deeply concerned about mutated variants of the coronavirus, which would justify further curtailing social and economic life.
At the end of last year, a hard lockdown was introduced in Germany at about the same time as the Netherlands.
