Number of Measles Cases in the US Threatens to Break 25-Year-Old Record. The measles outbreak in the United States continues. There are now almost more cases than in the whole of 2014. A record of 25 years ago threatens to fall.
71 new measles cases were recorded last week, 68 of them in the state of New York. This brings the total number of cases to 667 this year. In 2014, there were 667.
If growth continues like this, a record from 1994 threatens to fall. Then 963 people fell ill.
So in New York, many people are infected. In parts of Brooklyn, a state of emergency was declared because of the outbreak of the disease.
In nearby Rockland, people who have not been vaccinated are barred from public areas such as schools and shopping centres.
The judge in New York has allowed making vaccination compulsory because the problem is so significant. A group of Brooklyn residents had opposed this. If you fail to get the shot, you risk a fine of up to $ 1,000 ($ 890).
