Myanmar Raids Targeting Anti-Coup Protesters

Myanmar security forces searched all homes in a neighbourhood in Yangon during the night from Monday to Tuesday, where demonstrations against the military coup often occur.

Eyewitnesses say dozens of people have been arrested in the country’s largest city.

At the end of Monday’s protests, the army closed the entire neighbourhood, trapping about 200 protesters. With the raid, the security forces hoped to be able to arrest them all.

The security forces mainly targeted houses with a flag of Aung San Suu Kyi’s party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), hanging from the balcony. “They searched every house in the street,” says one resident. “If apartment buildings were locked, they would break the lock to get in.”

Many people in the area expect that significant protests will retake place on Tuesday and that the police and the army will intervene again. Recently three more protesters were killed; in total, more than 60 activists were killed by the security forces.

On Monday, many businesses such as shops, banks and schools were closed in protest against the coup. On February 1, the army took over power in the country, saying it was because the November elections had been fraudulent. In those elections, the NLD won, and the army party lost many seats.
