Pharmaceutical company Moderna will apply for emergency approval for its corona vaccine in both the European Union and the United States. The American company does this after the efficacy has also been shown from a more extensive analysis.
Moderna’s vaccine is 94.1 percent effective, and there are hardly any severe side effects. All participants in the test who developed severe health complaints had received a placebo.
Of the more than 30,000 participants in the test, 196 received Covid-19. Of these, 185 subjects were administered a placebo. Eleven persons who had received the vaccine nevertheless fell ill. The vaccine worked equally well in young and older subjects.
The side effects reported by the subjects included a sore spot where the injection was administered, fatigue, muscle pain and headache. They were usually a bit worse with the second vaccination.
Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel says his company is ready to start shipping vaccines as soon as approval has been received. “We already have millions of doses ready, and more is added every day.”
Moderna’s first shipments go entirely to the United States. In that country, the pharmaceutical company expects to be able to deliver 20 million doses this year.
