Inflation in Sri Lanka Gallops Above 50 Percent

Inflation in South Asian Sri Lanka rose to 54.6 percent in June. That is according to official figures on Friday. This is the ninth consecutive month of record inflation.

Sri Lanka is experiencing its worst economic crisis since independence. There is a serious shortage of fuel, food and medicines.

Inflation spiralling out of control has also caused the country to fail to repay outstanding debt, prompting it to enlist the help of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

That called on Sri Lanka on Thursday to put an end to corruption and substantially raise taxes.
