Historic Second Trial of Trump Begins in Senate

The historic second trial of Donald Trump begins on Tuesday in the US Senate. He must decide whether the former president was guilty of instigating an uprising in the run-up to the parliament building’s storming on 6 January.

The trial will begin with a four-hour debate as to whether the procedure is constitutional. According to Trump’s lawyers, this is not the case, because he is no longer president.

The Democratic prosecutors and Trump’s attorneys are then given 16 hours each to plead their case. There may also be further debates and a vote on the summoning of witnesses.

Trump must defend himself against charges that he incited his supporters in the run-up to the Capitol riots. After the presidential election on 3 November, he insisted without proof that he had lost through fraud.

Supporters then invaded the Capitol when Democrat Joe Biden’s victory was confirmed there. Five people were killed.

The process is historic for several reasons. Trump was the only president to face impeachment proceedings twice. He will also go down in history as the first former president to be prosecuted by Congress.

The chance that it will also lead to a conviction is considered small. The Democratic senators then need the support of at least 17 Republican colleagues.
