In Germany, 1,129 deaths from the coronavirus have been reported in 24 hours. It is the first time that the daily death toll from the pandemic has risen above 1,000.
The previous record came from last Wednesday. Then authorities registered the deaths of 962 corona patients.
More than 1.6 million infections have been diagnosed in Germany since the start of the pandemic. The official death toll stands at over 32,000. In addition to the rise in the death toll, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the German counterpart of the RIVM, also reported 22,459 new corona infections.
The increase in the number of deaths and infections seemed to turn out remarkably low in recent days. This was reported because some local authorities did not transmit data during the Christmas season.
German authorities have instituted a lockdown to prevent further spread of the virus.
This will remain in effect until at least 10 January. Germany has now also started vaccinating residents with the corona vaccine from the companies BioNTech and Pfizer.
