Google Has to Negotiate News Compensation With French Media

The American tech giant Google, part of Alphabet, has to consult with French media parties about fees for showing news. A French court has decided that.

Until now, Google has refused to reimburse media for the use of the content, especially photos and videos.

According to publishers and other media, Google’s refusal to pay for the use of content was illegal.

France is the first country within the European Union to apply the European directive that was adopted in 2019.

According to the French competition authority, competition rules apply to everyone, including in the digital world. For French media companies, which are often struggling financially, the possible payout from Google is a nice boost.

The ruling followed shortly after Google’s announcement that it was close to an agreement with French media companies on the matter.
