Dozens Killed in Train Derailment in Taiwan Tunnel

A train derailed in a tunnel in eastern Taiwan on Friday. According to the Minister of Transport, 36 people were killed, at least 72 people were injured.

The fire brigade fears more deaths.

Several people have been transported to the hospital with serious injuries. President Tsai Ing-wen is said to have asked hospitals to prepare for many victims.

The train, on its way to Taitung, derailed in a tunnel just north of Hualien. Some wagons would have hit the wall of the tunnel, the fire brigade writes in a statement. “The preliminary visual observations do not show many people any signs of life.”

There were about 350 people on the train at the time of the accident. The Central Rescue Operations Center reports that rescue workers are trying to get to four badly damaged wagons that are only accessible.
