Death Toll After Volcanic Eruption on the Indonesian Island of Java Rises to 15


On the Indonesian island of Java, the death toll after a volcanic eruption has risen to at least 15 people. About 68 others were injured.


The Semeru volcano is the highest mountain in Java. Heavy rain created a mudslide of ash and debris that hit several villages.

Some houses have almost completely disappeared in ash and mud straw. Volcanic eruptions in Indonesia are not uncommon, and it lies in the ring of fire, a zone where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are more frequent.

The nearly 3,700-meter high volcano is the highest mountain in Java. It is located in the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park, in the east of the island. The last major eruption of Semeru was in December 2020.
