Brits Consider Major Booster Campaign for Omicron

The United Kingdom may offer millions of extra people a booster vaccine due to the spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

JCVI vaccine committee, which advises the government, will decide shortly whether such a third shot is recommended for all adults, according to Sky News sources.

In the United Kingdom, only people over 40 and certain vulnerable groups are currently eligible for such a booster shot against the coronavirus. However, they can get it if they have been vaccinated for the second time with a corona vaccine at least six months earlier.

According to Sky News, shortening that period is also being considered. But, ultimately, the government has the last word on this.

The British authorities have already identified several Omicron infections in their own country. They also take other measures to prevent the spread of that variant.

For example, in England on Tuesday there will be a mask requirement in public transport and in public buildings, such as banks, post offices and shops. The rules are also being tightened for international travellers.
